Margie was determined that Dan would continue his education and graduate from Chaminade as his brothers had done. William Cullen McBride High School (McBride) was a St. Louis Archdiocesan High School operating under the guidance of the Brothers of Mary from 1925 to 1971. Located at the corner of N. Kingshighway Blvd. and Cote Brilliante Ave. in the City of St. Louis, McBride rose to become a local landmark and an exemplar in education. The school symbolized by its colonnades annually shaping the hearts and minds of 600 young men and prepared graduates to meet their moral and civic responsibilities. At their 50th reunion in 1983 (some 12 years following the school’s closing), the McBride class of 1935 conspired to rekindle the fire; the McBride Alumni Club was the result. Some 7,700 “McBride Micks” were contacted. Since the formation, the Chaminade community has “adopted” the McBride men; displaying their trophies and banners, hosting their annual Communion Breakfast and Hall of Fame ceremonies, and creating a “Throw-back” night where Chaminade athletes wear the McBride colors of orange and green and welcome the Micks to a grand reunion celebration. The McBride Legacy Scholarship is a return of all these blessings that have come to us. The objective of the McBride Alumni who began the Legacy Scholarship Program was to provide financial assistance to Chaminade students who are McBride legacies so they too can obtain a Marianist education.

He served as a combat rifleman in a mechanized infantry battalion that was a part of George Patton’s 3rd Army. In August 1922, Mr. and Mrs. T.C. Pinkley notified Chaminade’s President, Fr. Alfred H. Rabe, S.M., that they were unable to send their second son, Faherty, back to Chaminade in the fall due to the cost.

Fr. Rabe responded with this financial arrangement: “I have consulted with the members of the Board at Chaminade, and they all feel in this matter the way I do, that we can afford to do something ourselves to help you along in his case. I propose to take Faherty for this year at least without worrying you about his Board and Tuition. We can let it to you or to the boys to do something for us later on, after once they are earning a living. If you will permit us to make this offer to you, and if you accept, we would ask you to pay only for the extras – Music, Stationery, etc., and we would forget about the $350 and trust Faherty to pay it off in later years, with no time limit at all.”

All three of the Pinkley boys (James Carroll Pinkley 1923, Leonard Faherty Pinkley 1924 and Talbert “T.C.” Pinkley 1929) continued their attendance and graduated from Chaminade. No one who ever knew Jack Schreiber would argue that his nickname should be “Mr. Chaminade” or that his love of Chaminade was unequaled. For over 70 years, he lived and breathed all things Chaminade and never forgot the impact that the school had on his life. From the day Jack arrived on campus in 1937, he immersed himself in sports, activities and clubs. He and his wife Bette met through a Chaminade connection and were married in its chapel in 1947. His two brothers, two sons, and nine grandsons followed in his footsteps as Chaminade graduates. Jack remained loyal as a Fathers' Club and Alumni Board member and dedicated volunteer. He and Bette were frequently on campus, attending sporting events, First Friday masses and Alumni gatherings.

Together with his wife, Mary, Dr. Shuff educated all five of their sons from seventh through twelfth grades at Chaminade. Although he did not attend high school in St. Louis, Dr. Shuff quickly embraced all aspects of what Chaminade offered for his boys in both the classroom, on the ball fields, and in the swimming pool. He loved life, and even more so loved giving to others and did so in many ways over the collective 30 years the Shuff boys attended Chaminade as students. At the time of Mrs. Shuff’s death in 2017, her children added her name to the scholarship to honor her along with their father.

Vera Siefert was a strong and caring woman who dedicated her life to raising her only child, Ralph. They lived in South St. Louis where Ralph was first exposed to the Catholic faith through a friend and neighbor. He later attended St. Mary’s High School, entered the Society of Mary in 1963, and professed his vows in 1964. As a single parent, Vera faced many struggles, financial and otherwise, yet she persevered and remained the supportive and loving pillar in Ralph’s life until her passing in 2005. Chaminade’s 19th (and longest tenured) President had a passion for learning as evidenced by his multiple degrees. As a tribute to Fr. Ralph’s Jubilee Celebration of 50 years as a Professed Marianist, the Chaminade Family came together to establish this scholarship in Honor of Rev. Ralph A. Siefert, S.M.

The mystery "friend of Chaminade" scholarship Chris received was an unexpected award that pierced the negativity and provided financial relief at a time when his mother had serious concerns about their financial situation and future.
