Given the current situation with COVID-19, the opportunities for service have been greatly reduced. In light of this, Campus Ministry is reassessing the service requirements for the school year.
Instead of the service hour requirement, students will be moved to a project-based requirement. The emphasizes will be social analysis, action and reflection.
Guided by the gospel call to service those in need, students will be asked to consider “Who am I called to serve?” Working with Theology classes, students will reflect on this question and develop an action. This action may be done individually or with others and can vary from hosting a drive (canned food, monetary) to letter writing to physical service. The final requirement will be a reflection on the cause and the action taken.
Students will be asked to reflect on Matthew’s gospel passage of separating the sheep and goats (Matt 25:31-45) and the commission “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” in their Theology class(with consent of Theology instructor). Students will be asked to consider who they are called to help. Their response will be collected via a Google doc.
Students will then develop a plan of action to serve in the area they have chosen. This plan can be done individually, or in groups within their Theology class. The service coordinator will work with students to develop and execute the plan.
The final component is an individual reflection on the cause and action taken. This written response will either be done through Theology class as an assignment or with Campus Ministry.
The backlog of hours from previous years that were not completed will be waived.
