ART CLUB
 
Moderator: Mrs. Julie Laury

The Art Club supports group and individual work within the Fine Arts category, specifically Visual Arts.

The objectives of the club are to:
Provide students the opportunity to use a variety of mediums.
Offer students not currently in an Art class time to work in visual arts.
Create a time for like-minded students (those interested in creating) to work together.
Allow students the chance to share their talents with others and the school.

Works from the Art Club will be displayed for all to see. Participants also support the House System and other school entities with their pieces.

CARDINAL YEARBOOK

The yearbook staff is responsible for selecting and editing photos; designing the layout of pages and writing copy for the publication.
 
Yearbook meets at the end of each semester with the bulk of the work done at the end of the school year.

CSPN broadcast live streams of Chaminade events on youtube. We cover (but not limited to) most home Varsity Soccer, Football, Basketball, Hockey, Baseball, and Volleyball games. We also broadcast several non-athletic events like graduation, senior class day, etc.

Student in grades 9-12 (there are some opportunities for Middle Schoolers as well)

FRENCH HONOR
SOCIETY
 
Chaminade’s chapter of La Société Honoraire de Français was established in 2007. The aim of this organization is to:
  • stimulate interest in the study of French
  • promote high standards of scholarship
  • reward scholastic achievements
  • create enthusiasm for and an understanding of Francophone cultures
  • promote international friendship
Membership in the Société Honoraire de Français is based on scholarship in the French language courses as well as general scholarship. In order to become eligible for membership, students must:
  • be in Grades 9-12
  • enrolled in a level II French course (or higher)
  • maintain at least an “A” average in French
  • maintain at least a “B” average in all other subjects
Students must also commit to tutoring 1-2 hours per month in the Academic Resource Center. While it is not required, it is highly recommended that students involve themselves in the French Exchange Program.
 
At graduation, members wear the distinctive red, white, and blue honor cords, representing the colors of the French flag.
FILM CLUB
 
Moderator: Mr. Mark Laury
 
The purpose of the Film Club is to learn from each other how best to conceive/construct and execute a short film.
 
Members will:
  • Make a film to show at Viraghpalooza.
  • Learn techniques from students with experience.
  • Participate in workshops given by peers.
Film club provides a format for students to use film for storytelling and self-expression. One practical benefit is the support and structure the club offers for the House Show videos.
Film Club meets monthly (schedule will be distributed by Mr. Laury).

INT'L THESPIAN (DRAMA) SOCIETY

Moderators: Mr. Rob Grumich and Mrs. Susie Lawrence

JUNIOR CLASSICAL LEAGUE

Moderator: Dr. Matthew Crutchfield

The purpose of the Junior Classical League is to encourage an interest and an appreciations of the languages, literatures, and cultures of ancient Greece and Rome and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of Classical antiquity.

We meet once a month during Esto Vir in room 409. We also plan extra-curricular events once a month or so. These events include attending Latin mass, going to Museums, and competing in Certamen (Latin and Greek Scholar Bowl) tournaments.

Eligibility Requriements:
Student in a Latin or Greek language class.

MATH COMPETITION CLUB

Moderator: Mr. Kevin Arendt

Participants will encounter challenging yet fun recreational math problems that they wouldn’t normally be exposed to in traditional math classes.

We meet once a week or so during esto vir during the first semester. Other than that, there is one off campus competition and one or two after school on campus throughout the year. Participation is voluntary.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ROCKET CLUB
 

Moderator: Mr. Tim Pendleton and Mr. John Makarewicz

Rocket club is designed to introduce students to model rocketry. Students will meet once a week for several weeks to build a rocket. They will learn about the various components of a rocket and what they do. When their rocket is completed, they can enter their rocket into the custom paint contest and win a prize. There are two sessions per year, one in the fall and one in the winter and each concludes with a launch day where we shoot the rockets hundreds or thousands of feet into the air. It is an amazing event that draws attention from the whole campus.

Meeting schedule:
In the fall – during September/October. Once a week for 7 weeks
During the winter – January/February. Once a week for 7 weeks

Student in grades 6-8
 MOCK TRIAL
 
 

Mock Trial is open to high school students interested in developing their advocacy skills and learning more about the legal system. Students participate as attorneys, witnesses, and timekeepers in a fictional criminal or civil case and compete against other high school teams in a real courthouse. Recruitment takes place at the beginning of each school year.

Interest in advocacy skill development, legal system

MODEL UNITED NATIONS
 

Model United Nations is open to high school students interested in international affairs.  Each year, students represent a country in the United Nations and advocate their country’s perspective in a simulation with other students.  Students also participate in the Washington University Model United Nations Symposium and Model United Nations of the University of Chicago.  Recruitment takes place at the beginning of each school year.

 NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY
Moderator: Mr. Keith Mug
 

Each year, 7th and 8th grade students are considered for induction into the National Junior Honor Society. To be eligible, the student must have been in attendance at Chaminade for at least one semester, have a current and cumulative average of 93% or above [these averages are not rounded up], and display the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship for NJHS.

Students in NJHS participate in an annual service project wrapping Christmas presents for the Adopt-A-Family drives (pictures attached).

Students are inducted into the National Junior Honor Society at an all-school assembly in the Spring.

Student in grades 7-8
Chaminade student for one semester (minimum)
Current & Cumulative average of 93% or above (no rounding)

OUTLOOKS LITERARY MAGAZINE

Moderators: Mrs. Cindy Bishop and Mrs. Julie Laury

The Outlooks Literary Magazine is open to any student in grades 6-12 who wants to submit creative writing and/or artwork. We only meet a few times during the year in Esto Vir. The magazine provides an outlet for our students’ creativity and it offers leadership for upperclassmen who help design and edit the magazine. Mrs. Laury handles the artwork submissions and I handle the writing. I recruit by sending out e-mails and talking with students.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

Moderator: Mr. Mark Laury

Members of the Photography Club learn how to take better pictures, both digital and analog (darkroom), and have a community of similar students to support and encourage.

The objectives of the club are to:
Participate in moderator/student led discussions of technique.
Attend field trips and photo shoots.
Create online creative using Flickr.
Participate in a photo show at the end of the year.

The club provides an opportunity for those interested to improve and understand the challenges of taking good/successful photos. Members also support the "visual training" of the Visual Arts Dept. The club meets 2 times per month.

Student in grades 6-12

POTTER'S GUILD
Moderator: Mr. Mark Laury
 

The Potter’s Guild provides open studio time for pottery students to develop their work.

The objectives of the club are to:

  • Provide time for self-exploration via free and open studio time.
  • Develop specific techniques that are taught in a workshop format.
  • Attend Ceramics Conference annually.

The Potter's Guild prepares students to sell their work at the pottery sale and creates a community of like-minded makers. Members meet approximately 3 times per month.

Eligibility Requirements:
Student in grades 6-12 who has attended wheel throwing camp or taken a ceramics class.

ROBOTICS

Moderators: Mr. Joseph Gilfoil

Chaminade Robotic club has been in existence for two years. The club competes in the FTC league of the First Robotic organization.

Statement of intent: We currently have two FTC teams, our goal is to re-establish the Lego Robotics for the middle school and to organize a FRC team in the high school someday. We have decided to open the FTC teams to 8th graders next year which will call for us to add two more teams.

We practice three to five days a week (regular practice 3 days, competition prep 5 days).

SCHOLAR BOWL
Moderator: Mr. Chris Shaver
 

Scholar Bowl is an interscholastic academic quiz competition. Students on Varsity and JV teams compete against teams from other schools in a private school league and in the MSHSAA district and state tournament. Competitions consist of individual toss-up and team bonus questions utilizing a lock-out buzzer system. Questions include topics in history, literature, science, mathematics, fine arts, and current events. The Scholar Bowl teams also sponsor the school-wide Lunchtime Academic Quiz League in which students from each house compete in the cafeteria during lunch as part of the House Cup. The Quiz League kicks-off each year with an all-school assembly competition. The purpose of Scholar Bowl and the Quiz League is to encourage, recognize, and celebrate the academic knowledge of Chaminade students.

Membership: students in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate on the JV (9th and 10th grade only) and Varsity Scholar Bowl teams in competition with other schools. Students in all grades compete in the Lunchtime Academic Quiz League as representatives of their houses.

Any high school students interested in competing on the Scholar Bowl teams should contact the coach, Mr. Shaver, at [email protected]. There are no dues or fees. Students are expected to attend and participate in regular practices during Esto Vir periods. After-school competitions in the private school league occur one day per week from late October through December. The MSHSAA district tournament takes place on a Saturday in April of each school year.

SPANISH CLUB

Moderator: Profe Rosario

Spanish Club focuses on cultural connections and activities related to Spanish/Hispanic/Latin culture in the STL area. We have been to a Flamenco show, eaten tapas, seen how Argentinian empanadas are prepared, celebrated the Dia de los Muertos, and the list goes on! Our aim is to spark interest in the language and culture through these events.

We do most of our communication through email, but will have the occasional meeting here and there. We gear towards having 1-2 events per month depending on what’s happening in the community. Most of our events have fallen on Fridays after school or on Saturdays.

Chaminade’s chapter of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica is known as the Bilbao Chapter. The aim of this organization is to:
  • stimulate interest in the study of Spanish
  • promote high standards of scholarship
  • reward scholastic achievements
  • create enthusiasm for and an understanding of Hispanic cultures
  • promote international friendship
  • provide service to others in need
 
Membership in the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica is based on scholarship in the Spanish language courses as well as general scholarship. In order to become eligible for membership, students must:
 
  • be in Grades 9-12
  • enrolled in a level II Spanish course (or higher)
  • maintain at least an “A” average in Spanish
  • maintain at least a “B” average in all other subjects
Students must also commit to tutoring the underclassmen in Spanish 1-2 hours each semester from 7-8 p.m. via Google Meet. While it is not required, it is highly recommended that students participate in the Spanish Immersion Trip.
 
The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica has monthly mandatory meetings. The location is posted under the Spanish Honor Society course on Canvas to which all members have access.
 
There is an end-of-the-semester celebration each semester at an authentic Hispanic restaurant.
 
At graduation, members wear the distinctive red and gold honor cords, representing the colors of the Spanish flag.

YOUTH AND GOVERNMENT

Moderators: Ms. Hannah BryantMr. Bob Murphy

Youth and Government (YAG) is a student-driven simulation of state government. Beginning in the fall of each year, students come together to choose their roles, register and prepare for the State Conference. At the State Conference, students create their version of state government under the guidelines of the Missouri Constitution. All participants in Missouri come together for this three-day event at the State Capitol. Legislators meet in committees and in the House and Senate chambers to debate legislation. Attorneys try their cases before student judges and engage in a trial competition. The entire event is covered by student media. Participants also engage in campaigns and elections for officers who will serve during the following year.

Meetings take place after school or before school weekly, from August-December.
