Middle School Stem Curriculum

Start Your STEM Journey at an Earlier Age

At Chaminade, STEM is not exclusive to our high school students as we provide a middle school curriculum that allows even our 6th graders to start their STEM journey.  Each grade level has its own STEM curriculum which provides our students a sound foundation for more advanced high school classes.

6th Grade Curriculum

STEM CLASS: Computer Science for Innovators and Makers

DESCRIPTION: Computer Science for Innovators and Makers teaches students that programming goes beyond the virtual world into the physical world. Students are challenged to creatively use sensors and actuators to develop systems that interact with their environment. Designing algorithms and using computational thinking practices, they code and upload programs to microcontrollers that perform a variety of authentic tasks. The unit broadens students’ understanding of computer science concepts through meaningful applications. Teams select and solve a personally relevant problem related to wearable technology, interactive art, or mechanical devices.

OTHER PRACTICAL ARTS OFFERINGS:  Intro to Chaminade & Technology

7th Grade Curriculum

STEM CLASS: Automation & Design

DESCRIPTION: Students explore robotics and automation as they take on the role of interns, and work in teams to create prototypes to meet the needs of clients. They build and analyze the mechanical systems and automate them with programmed input and output devices.

8th Grade Curriculum

STEM CLASS:  Design & Modeling

DESCRIPTION: Students begin to recognize the value of an engineering notebook to document and capture their ideas.  Students are introduced to and use the design process to solve problems and understand the influence that creative and innovative design has on their lives.  Students use industry-standard 3D modeling software to create a virtual image of their designs and produce a portfolio to showcase their creative solutions.  As students continue to use their engineering sketchbooks to document and capture their ideas, they will continue to use the design process to solve problems and understand the influence that creative and innovative design has on their lives.  Students use 3D modeling software to create detail and assembly models showing creative solutions to engineering problems.
