High School STEM Curriculum

Start Your STEM Journey at an Earlier Age

At Chaminade, STEM is not exclusive to our high school students as we provide a middle school curriculum that allows even our 6th graders to start their STEM journey.  Each grade level has its own STEM curriculum which provides our students a sound foundation for more advanced high school classes.

9th Grade Curriculum

STEM CLASS: Intro to Engineering Design

DESCRIPTION: Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) is a high school level foundation course in the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Engineering Program.  This accelerated course is offered to 9th graders who have demonstrated the ability to build on skills and programs taught through the Middle School PLTW curriculum.  In IED, students are introduced to the engineering profession and a common approach to the solution of engineering problems, an engineering design process.  Through both individual and collaborative team activities, projects, and problems, students will solve problems as they practice common engineering design and documentation of design solutions according to accepted technical standards and they will use current 3D design and modeling software to represent and communicate solutions.  IED is a college credit course.

GRADE LEVELS OFFERED:  9 (with 8th grade recommendation), 10, 11

OTHER PRACTICAL ARTS OFFERINGS:  Esto Vir Leadership, Technology Skills

10th Grade Curriculum

STEM CLASS: Principles of Engineering

DESCRIPTION: Principles of Engineering (POE) is the second foundation course in the PLTW high school pre-engineering program.  This is a foundation course specifically designed for students interested in furthering their knowledge of design and engineering.  This POE course exposes students to real-world learning and hands-on experiences.  Students interested in engineering, biomechanics, aeronautics, and other applied math and science arenas will discover PLTW is an exciting portal into these industries.  This course of engineering exposes students to major concepts they will encounter in a postsecondary engineering course of study.  Students employ engineering and scientific concepts in the solution of engineering to various challenges, documenting their work and communicating solutions to peers and members of the professional community.  This is a college credit course.

GRADE LEVELS OFFERED:  10, 11, 12
OTHER STEM OFFERINGS:  Intro to Engineering Design
OTHER PRACTICAL ARTS OFFERINGS:  Intro to Business/Personal Finance, Network/Operating Systems, Web Page Design, AP Computer Science Principles, ACC Advanced Management Information Systems, Natural History, Video Broadcasting

11th Grade Curriculum

STEM CLASSES:  Environmental Sustainability & Digital Electronics

DESCRIPTION:  In Environmental Sustainability, students investigate and design solutions to solve real-world challenges related to clean drinking water, a stable food supply, and renewable energy.  Students are introduced to environmental issues and use the engineering design process to research and design potential solutions.  Utilizing the activity-, project-, problem-based (APB) teaching and learning pedagogy, students transition from completing structured activities to solving open-ended projects and problems that require them to develop planning, documentation, communication, and other professional skills.

GRADE LEVELS OFFERED:  11, 12
In Digital Electronics, students study the electronic circuits that are used to process and control digital signals.  In contrast to analog electronics, where information is represented by a continuously varying voltage, digital signals are represented by two discrete voltages or logic levels.  This distinction allows for greater signal speed and storage capabilities and has revolutionized the world of electronics.  The major focus of this course is to expose students to the design process of combinational and sequential logic design, teamwork, communication methods, engineering standards, and technical documentation.  Students will analyze, design, and build digital electronic circuits.  While implementing these designs, students will continually hone their professional skills, creative abilities, and understanding of the circuit design process.

GRADE LEVELS OFFERED:  11, 12

OTHER STEM OFFERINGS:  Intro to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, Aerospace Engineering

OTHER PRACTICAL ARTS OFFERINGS:  Intro to Business/Personal Finance, Network/Operating Systems, Web Page Design, AP Computer Science Principles, ACC Advanced Management Information Systems, ACC Cisco Networking Fundamentals, ACC Cisco Routers/Routing, ACC Financial Accounting, International Business, ACC Business Law, ACC Principles of Economics, AP Macroeconomics, Video Broadcasting

12th Grade Curriculum

STEM CLASS:  Aerospace Engineering

DESCRIPTION:  Students learn the fundamentals of atmospheric and space flight.  Students will explore the physics of flight and bring concepts to life by designing an airfoil, propulsion system, and rockets.  Students will learn basic orbital mechanics using industry-standard software.  Students will also learn and explore robot systems through projects such as remotely operated vehicles.
