Chaminade Resident Students

Chaminade opened as a boarding school back in 1910 and that boarding tradition continues today with students from all over the United States and the world. The resident program offers a unique way for the faculty and staff to further implement the mission of Chaminade College Preparatory School globally and, conversely, allows for a rich cultural diversity within our own classrooms.

The resident program seeks to create a family atmosphere, which is integral to the Marianist philosophy. The weekly schedule is highly structured so that the boys learn executive functioning skills for later in life but evenings and weekends allow time for building community and long-lasting friendships. The resident staff work hard to nurture the boys emotionally, socially, spiritually, and academically. Knowing that boys in their care sometimes make poor decisions, discipline is administered based upon Father Chaminade’s belief in “a prudent tendency towards leniency.”

Academic success is a priority in the resident program and a support system is in place to monitor the young men that board on campus. There are required, supervised study hours during the week and academic support provided by the resident staff for any student in need of help. Ongoing communication takes place between the Resident Director and the teaching staff so that any issues are addressed in a timely manner.

The young men in the resident program are provided with a plethora of activities outside of the school day. In addition to the extensive list of teams and clubs offered by Chaminade, the resident staff schedules a variety of fun off-campus events on the weekends. With the rigorous course load during the week, the boys have the opportunity to get re-energized with enjoyable outings on Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday.

Lastly, resident life has many long-term benefits as well, including independence, better preparedness for the university and a global view that is so crucial in our world today. With over 100 years of boarding experience, Chaminade’s resident program plays a key role in “cultivating the inherent gifts, skills, and talents of our young men so that they are prepared for success in college and in life.”
